Among the many Native American fox legends, an Apache Story tells that the fox was a trickster who was very good at convincing other animals to help him. He wanted to learn to cry like geese, so the geese made wings for him and as he flew with them, he mimicked their cries. They warned him to keep his eyes closed while flying, but as they passed over a village of fireflies, even with his eyes closed, the fox could see light- it was fire! He could not help himself, and opened his eyes to behold the beauty of his first view of fire. Previously, there had been no fire anywhere else. Of course, the fox fell from the sky. Although he was rescued by the kindly fireflies, and was befriended by them, he still stole some of their fire, bringing it into creation!
